The cold winter months are coming and that means so is the flu. The odds are you'll be suffering from it soon enough even if you are not already. The numbers don't lie either. Did you know that the average American adult gets either a cold or flue two to four times a year? The numbers jump up to five to nine time for children. That's why it is so important for you learn about flu prevention before it is too late.
So how do you avoid getting sick? You do so through prevention. No one's immune system is so strong that it can fight off each and every virus that it encounters especially your child's immune system. They need your help by keeping all those nasty germs and viruses away from them by making sure they don't come into contact with possible infected people or objects. Here are the most recommended ways to keep your child cold and flu free this winter season.
- The most common way colds and the flu are spread is by people rubbing their nose and eyes with their hands which are contaminated with a virus. That's why it is so important to wash your hands often and regularly. It helps kill any germs on your hands and prevents them the coming back so easily. So always remember to wash them before, during, and after you prepare food. Wash them before you eat, whenever you use the bathroom, or when your hands are dirty. It is a good idea to do it more regularly when someone in your home is sick.
- Routinely wash your hands with an antibacterial soap and water. When cleaning items in your home use a disinfectant on furniture surfaces, toys, and other objects that children may put in their mouths. As you're doing this cleaning, it works best to use paper towels that can just be thrown away after you're done using them. Cloth towels work well too but wash them immediately afterwards.
- If your child is suffering from a cold, use disposable tissues to wipe or blow their nose.
- While it is good manners for your children to cover their mouth when they are coughing, it is also a great way to prevent the spread of germs. Teach them the correct way to cough or sneeze by turning their heads and cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue. If a tissue isn't available, tell them it is perfectly ok to use the inside of their elbow.
- Keep your children and yourself away from anyone who is sick. I know it is sometime impossible to completely avoid certain people who are sick, so if you need to try to do it yourself without exposing your children to any germs. Turnabout is fair play and why you should also stay away from other when you or your kids are sick. If you or your kids are not feeling well, don't go to work and don't send them to school.
- Try to have your kids avoid any unnecessary contact with a lot of different people. In a large crowd, you don't know who is sick and who isn't. Some people may be contagious even without showing symptoms.
