Fish Back

Why does my fish have a crooked back?

The past couple days I have noticed that one of the scissortails in my tank started to have the back go crooked. Kind of like an ess shape. Is this something that is treatable? Will it start to happen to other fish in the tank?

A crooked back could be due to injury, a bacterial infection, inbreeding, or just living in poor water quality. If fish are stressed, they will swim rapidly around the aquarium, often bumping into objects and/or the glass walls. The crooked back could have been a result of this.

It could have also started appearing on your fish due to a bacterial infection. If you had ich, or any other parasite infect your aquarium, it's apparent that he could be suffering from that.

Inbreeding is also a cause of this sad dillema among fish. It will cause the fry to have specific deformations such as a crooked back. If it's because of that, it's usually not treatable.

The last thing that could've caused it would be that your fish was living in poor water quality. High levels of nitrites and ammonia can cause a fish to become deformed, which is why many "starter/feeder fish" that people use to cycle aquariums become deformed after being forced to live through ammonia and nitrite spikes.

If your fish was a result of inbreeding, it won't spread to the other fish. However, if your tank has poor water quality, the other fish may be suffering. I recommend you test your water and perform a water change if necessary.

This restorative pose is great to do in bed before you go to sleep. It creates a wonderful transition from a busy mind, into a relaxed and spacious state for sleep. Also good to do upon waking. Relax into Supported Fish for 5 to 10 minutes with deep breathing.

1. Use a cushion or bed pillow (pillow may be folded in half) as a support

2. Lay over the support with your shoulders at the top of the pillow and your head off of the pillow (pillow is under your shoulder blades and upper back so you are gently arching over it)

3. Position arms 45' from your body (or hands about 2 feet away from hips). Palms face upward in a posture of receptivity

4. Breathe deeply with long exhalations through the nose (Dirgha 3-Part Breath if you know it)

5. To come out, roll to your side and rest, remove pillow and lie flat on your back to feel the effects

- Great for upper back, neck and shoulder pain
