what keeps an insulated container hot or cold?
When a stainless steel food jar says it has vacuum insulation for maximum temperature, what does the vacuum part mean?
Also, is it the type of stainless steel that's used that keep the contents inside of the container hot/cold or is it the screw on LID that traps in the heat/cold that keeps the food hot/cold?
There is no actual vaccum like outer space between the walls of your insulated cooler!!! It just means they suck as much air out as structurally possible with a vaccum type device and seal it up. Air is a much more thermally conductive medium then, say styrofoam. So less air in the insulation means less heat is allowed to cross either into the container if has cold food/liquid inside or out of the container if it has hot food/liquid inside. The same can be applied to the lid, the tighter you seal something, the less air in the seal and heat has to conduct through a much less thermally conductive medium.
Be carefull not to over think things like crazy people who responded earlier.
