Why is the speed of sound (and light) constant?
So a friend and I are studying for the MCAT and we are trying to derive the Doppler effect equation and then after we got it it occurred to us that no one ever told us why the speed of light and sound are constant.
Anybody know?
It's a bee in my bonnet that I just can't shake off.
I know it changes depending on the medium, but why is it constant in a vacuum?
The sound speed is not a constant!!
Depends of the medium in which travels. Also sound "depends" on the movement of the listener (if say you are traveling a half of the speed of sound, and someone makes a sound behind you, you would hear the sound at a lesser speed, part of the Doppler effect).
Light in the other hand is a constant. Cannot be decelerated or accelerated, nothing can travel faster than light, and do not depends of the watchers velocity (if say you are traveling a half of the speed of light, and someone beam you light, you would see light will pass you at the speed of light). This occurs because light it the most "direct" source of energy in the universe.
