How can I get some relief from the constant, terrible pain caused by a pinched nerve in my neck/shoulder?!?

Bad shoulders run in my family, but I think this issue also has something to do with my years as a waitress. Holding lots of weight straight up in the air put a lot of strain on my neck and shoulders. Now, every once in a while, I get what I assume is a pinched nerve. It feels like the issue might be in the base of my neck somewhere, but it affects my left shoulder terribly. Once the pain comes, it stays for days at a time. I can't sleep because no matter what position I'm in it seems to put pressure on my shoulder and makes the pain worse. I've been reduced to whining and whimpering to my husband about the pain at 4 in the morning... so sad. IBProufen seems to help a small amount. I've also got some response from ice packs. BUT IT'S NOT ENOUGH. I need a miracle. Some sports cream or some herbal rememdy, maybe? I'm getting desperate ) :

The majority of my family suffers with Degenerative Disc Disease in some form or fashion. You should really find a good orthopedic surgeon to determine if you have this. I found relief after my surgeon performed an Anterior Discetomy and fused my C5-6 vertebrae. This might not be the case for you, but it would be worth looking into. The doctor can order x-rays, MRIs, and CT Scans to determine if this is your problem ...

Once my doctor did the surgery, my pain went away. Prior to going to the surgery, some of my pain relief techniques included:
1. I used heating pads and Thermacare Wraps. I liked the Thermacare b/c you could stick in on your skin and they provided up to 12 hours of relief.
2. Aleve - I would take this or Ibuprofen.

The "Unhappy Triad" is a knee injury which usually occurs in contact sports such as football, when the knee is hit on the lateral (outside) aspect, and is forced inward. The Unhappy Triad injury has also been referred to as the terrible triad, or O'Donoghue's triad. This causes an injury to three important structures in your knee which are the : anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), meniscus, and the medial collateral ligament (MCL).

A "plant and turn" non-contact movement can cause ACL tears and meniscus tears. In this example, of an Unhappy Triad injury the MCL injury occurs with some type of lateral blow or fall. A lateral blow to the knee, like from the action of a tackle, can cause an Unhappy Triad injury.

As the knee is hit from the outside, your ACL can tear, thus causing the knee to shift. When the knee shifts like this, your femur and tibia compress against the meniscus, inevitably causing damage to this cartilage. Due to the resulting position of the knee the MCL can also tear.

As a result, your knee can become extremely unstable due to this kind of knee injury.

So, now what? - What can you do to help your knee, both before and after such an injury?

Surgery can help reconstruct the injured knee ligaments, but after the surgery is complete, this does not mean that your knee is perfectly healthy. - The use of a well designed knee brace can help improve your stability and can also help reduce your knee pain as a result of the support that it can provide.

Moreover, a knee brace can also be used for prophylactic reasons before a terrible triad injury ever occurs.. The likely hood of this kind of injury occurring would be far less if you wore a knee brace for support. This is achieved because the medial and lateral uprights on the brace would help to prevent excessive medial movements at the knee and this would decrease the chances of this injury. You are in essence helping to take away the way the injury needs to occur, which will allow you to keep playing the sport your are participating in.

Do not look back in the future wishing that you would have taken these words more seriously. This information can help you avoid any future regrets.

How can get relief from pain and swelling of left knee?

I injured my left knee (sprain) during a sporting event 6 weeks ago. First few days I followed the self-care directions (cold packs, elevated above heart while sleeping, no load on the weak knee etc.). There is no significant pain but when I wake every morning there is stiffness, swelling in the knee area and a dull pain until I warm up with some strech exercises. After a warm shower it is ok. But by evening, the pain is back with a bit of swelling.

What advice you have for me to get back strength in my knees. I am dying to get back to my favorite sport - Tennis.

The first piece of advice is don't overdo it too early on. Jumping right back into Tennis is a sure way to make this a chronic injury.

Second, buy a knee brace that holds the patella (the Knee Cap) in place. You can identify them because they usually have a hole missing in the center to guide the cap of bone and cartiledge that completes the articulation of the joint.

Third, start your conditioning in the water. Start by warming up with a walk around the shallow end of a pool. The extra pull will give you a decent workout without any large range of movement. Move up to squat thrusts under the water--remember to breath above the water, it's something easy to forget.

Add a light jog, of maybe quarter to half a mile in the morning after a good stretch. Wear your knee brace religiously. The added support will help you gain confidence in the knee and protect it less. When you start to feel only a twinge of movement in the bandage you can start adding Tennis back into your day.

You may wear out a couple of bandages before you're fully healed and recovered to where you were 6 months to three years. You may find that having the knee brace helps to give you security in the knee for some time to come.
