Curly Hair and Combination Skin in Desert Climates?

I have super curly, thick hair and combination skin. I usually live in a wet and cold climate but I'm traveling to the Middle East in the spring. Do you have any suggestions for how to deal with combination skin and curly in dry and hot climates? Preferably natural or organic recipes or products.

Tinea versicolor is light white so in the winter and fall, no one can really see it.. However, when the sun comes out and the individual get tanned, the once hidden tinea versicolor appears I have seen many patients with this and some have needlessly suffered with it for years. There are simple and effective natural treatments which, when followed properly, typically result in a very very happy individual.

We have all heard that Tea Tree Oil works wonders as a natural Tinea versicolor treatment. Did you know that applying that much tea tree oil to your skin can be toxic? Do you realize that there are some not-so-healthy ways to extract the tea tree oil? If you do decide to use tea tree oil, which I do not recommend, please please dilute it with olive oil and choose a steam-distilled tea tree oil. Many companies do not state if it there tea tree oil is steam distilled or if they used harsh toxic solvents.

We have heard of many recommending Selsun Blue as a tinea versicolor treatment; however that does not work for many either as it does not contain enough of the active ingredient.

What does work, and has been used as a natural treatment for centuries, is topical sulfur mud. Sulfur is a natural anti-fungal agent which when applied to the skin of these patients for two weeks, it all disappears. The skin pigmentation needs to adjust once the tinea versicolor is gone especially if the individual is lighter skinned and tanned. Once the skin pigmentation adjusts, no one will be able to ever tell that individual suffered from this.

Where does one find such sulfur-containing mud?

From under lakes typically. One such sulfur-containing mud is called Saprox and comes from deep beneath a lake in the Czech Republic. Saprox is a natural treatment and has worked successfully on many patients suffering from it. While Saprox works well on the surface, tinea versicolor does not simply appear on everyone's skin now does it?

Why does this appear? That is not entirely known but I have strong ideas about that.

• If one's immune system is not up to speed, they are more likely to suffer from fungal infections.
• If one consumes a diet high in carbohydrates and sugars, they are more likely to suffer from fungal infections.
• If one is under stress, they are more likely to suffer from it as stress increases blood sugar levels.
• If one does not get sufficient vitamin D, vitamin A, zinc, selenium, they are more likely to suffer from tinea versicolor. Notice that these are skin nutrients AND immune support nutrients...hmmmmm

Remember this please. The skin is telling you something. Don't simply just rub on something and think that it will go away for good. Change your diet, ensure adequate nutrition and sun exposure, reduce stress and use healthy soaps - and I might add, a shower filter. That is key. And I almost forgot about it.

Why is a chlorine shower filter important for those suffering from tinea versicolor?

• Chlorine is a skin irritant. Why?
• Because it dries out the skin thereby causing the skin to make more oils in an attempt to rehydrate the skin.
• A viscous cycle ensues as chlorine continues to hit the skin in the shower causing the skin to make excess oil.
• Excess oil equals an increased likelihood to get skin problems such as acne and tinea versicolor.
• Installing a chlorine shower filter stops chlorine from hitting your skin.
• Your skin no longer gets very dry using a chlorine shower filter thereby your skin no longer has to produce so much excess oil.
• Less excess oil production leads to healthier skin.

That also brings up another point. Use natural soaps. Don't use super highly astringent ones either as you don't want to dry your skin out with those. Use a nice oatmeal soap or something like it. Consider dry skin brushing and a nice rough towel - not those big fluffy ones. Rough up your skin - it likes to breathe.

Between applying the Saprox Natural Antifungal, installing your new chlorine shower filter, changing your diet, increasing your nutrients and using less harsh soaps, yours will be gone for good.

o Dip your finger tips into the oil and begin at the hairline, massaging with small circular motions, slowly working your way back over the entire scalp. Add more oil to your finger tips when necessary.

o You can do this for as long as you are comfortable to continue.  Be sure to apply enough pressure so you feel the skin moving over the skull, and not just glide your fingertips over your skin.

o When finished, warm a dry towel in the microwave and place it on your head. Let the oil set and absorb into the scalp for ten minutes or more.

o Finally, shampoo and condition.  Get in the habit of giving a good scalp massage while shampooing and conditioning as well.

o If your scalp is extremely dry, you can leave the oil in overnight and wash out the next morning.

Make a habit of applying these scalp massage techniques once per week.  You will notice you hair grow healthier over time and your scalp will 'feel' rejuvenated.  Vary the essential oils you use to see which gives you the best results and experience.  Be cautious of possible allergic reactions to some essential oils, and check with a professional massage therapist or aromatherapist to see if a particular oil is appropriate if you are pregnant or nursing.

To supplement your weekly 'full' scalp massage incorporating the use of scalp massage oil, get in a daily habit of massaging your scalp while in the shower, watching TV, or even walking around.  You will become a skilled scalp massager and reap the benefits of a rejuvenated and healthy scalp.

Here's a point worth considering: if you want to prevent wrinkles, visit your friendly neighborhood acupuncturist. Promoters of facial acupuncture claim this procedure can literally take years off your face since it eliminates facial lines, eye bags, and other skin problems.

Known for its pain-relieving properties, acupuncture is also widely used in China to prevent the onset of wrinkles. Proponents say regular treatments can stimulate the flow of blood and energy through the skin and delay the signs of aging.

"The principle is that this hydrates, plumps up and boosts the skin's supply of nutrients and oxygen, thus decreasing the appearance of wrinkles and blemishes," according to Esme Floyd in the Daily Mail.

"Treatment with facial acupuncture isn't going to iron out your wrinkles in one go but so far results have been good. My baby won't sleep without covering his face w/his blanket. What would you do?

He's always liked to bury his face into something, be it my boobs or crease between my arm and body when he goes to sleep. It doesn't matter if it's dark or light. Lately he will kick his legs up pulling his blanket up and he will go to sleep with it over his head completely. I will take it off, but he ends up pulling it back over his face/head. When my sister was born, my mom had the same problem. She'd take the blanket off my sister's face and she'd put it back. Get one of those knit blankets with a lot of holes in it (not big enough for anything other then a finger to fit through). That way he can breathe still.
