The key to revving your sex drive is to understand its inner workings. While men can pop Viagra, women can't quick-fix a flagging libido with a magic pill. Women's sex drive is complex, but science is helping us to figure out solutions.

A Lesson in Desire

Desire is derived from the Latin words for 'lust' and 'to please'. The psychoanalyst Siegmund Freud coined the term libido, which he defined as psychic energy associated with sexual urges. It's just about impossible to pinpoint what's normal when it comes to sex drive due to enormous individual differences. We do know from research, however, that a healthy desire range in women is about two to three times per week.

Sex drive is often likened to a big pizza, with hormones, sexual health, lifestyle issues such as diet and exercise, the form of your relationship, and mood killers like stress, depression and various medications making up the different slices.

The desire-passion cocktail of hormones is the strongest sex drive determinant in women. Testosterone in particular plays a role in female sex drive. Adrenal Burnout

One of the substances that is required to produce testosterone is DHEA, which is secreted by the adrenal glands. DHEA levels drop as women get older, but more importantly, they get depleted by stress. A high percentage of women who complain of low libido do so because of adrenal burnout. When you're stressed, sex drive is often the first to go. It's your body's way of saying, 'I can't cope with life right now so it's not safe for me to make babies.' Periods of stress are also often accompanied by poor nutrition, too much caffeine, too little sleep and lack of exercise, which all exacerbate adrenal burnout.

How to Supercharge Low Libido

If you're struggling with low libido, take the time to assess your stress levels. If you suspect this is what's holding you back, take the following steps:

1. Head to your GP. Make an appointment with your doctor to discuss both contraception and adrenal health. It's possible that your libido is being affected by the contraception brand you're using. Hormonal contraceptives, including the pill, the patch and the vaginal ring can have a negative impact on your levels of desire. To determine the best approach for relieving sexual problems, hormone testing may be beneficial. Having a full profile, including DHEA and thyroid hormone, done is a good starting point for any kind of treatment. Double testing is recommended, because hormone levels tend to fluctuate.

2. Lower your stress levels by making time for fun and pleasurable activities even if you're busy. If you think you don't have time, it's probably because you don't prioritise it. People tend to make time for the things that are most important to them! Reconnecting with your body can be as simple as sinking into a warm bath with scented oils, getting a massage, or finding ways to connect with nature.

3. Stop smoking. Research tells us that smokers have decreased blood flow to the organs, including the genitals. Toxic substances also poison the ovaries which impact negatively on your hormone levels.

4. Optimise your diet by supporting the adrenal glands. Essential nutrients to protect the adrenal glands from stress are B5, B6, C and magnesium (ask your doctor about recommended dosages). Bananas, turkey and honey are all high in B vitamins. Make sure you consume enough zinc and iodine, two minerals that impact on your energy levels. You can also try herbal supplements such as withania, Siberian ginseng and passionflower. Black cohosh, wild yam, doing quai, and chasteberry assist in regulating vaginal lubrication which is a vital component of successful sexual intercourse.

5. Too little snooze time contributes to stress and subsequently low libido, so make sure you get enough sleep - at least 8 hours per night. Establish a routine and stay with it.

6. Engage in exercise such as fast walking, cycling or swimming to increase blood flow to the genital area. Working out also increases your endorphin levels. Even more importantly, commit to doing Kegel-exercises on a daily basis. These strengthen pelvic-floor muscles and increase blood supply, which build up vaginal wall thickness and lubrication. Kegel-exercises further improve libido by enhancing clitoral sensitivity and the strength of orgasm.

7. Unwind with meditation. Women who know how to relax and meditate frequently have a higher sex drive. Meditation actually raises your DHEA levels. You can also try audio-therapy three to four times per week. Listening to the sounds of nature - the song of whales, the wind through the trees, or birds chirping - helps to shut out the monkey chatter in your mind.

There are many ways to revamp your sex life once your sex drive is supercharged. Good sex is an important part of joyful living. Don't settle for anything less!

Despite all the claims that chemicals used in farming are bad for us, it turns out cancer rates have dropped 15 percent since farmers began using chemicals. How is that possible? Well it's mainly due to people being able to afford more fruits and vegetables, because the chemicals allow more to be grown. That's one reason the average life expectancy in the US went up by almost 10 years between 1950 and 2000.

As for the environment, it turns out organic farming has its own issues. Because it is much less efficient, there is actually a shortage of organic food available. This leads to people having the food shipped in from much further away. We're no scientists, but we think that doing things like shipping organic milk 900 miles over the highway in a truck belching diesel fumes is probably canceling out any environmental benefits you might have gained from going organic.

With the push today to get everybody to quit smoking, today a smoker can choose a wide range of stop smoking treatments of his own personal choice.
