In recent years, there has been an explosion in the use and popularity of exercise balls in gymnasiums, fitness centers and health clubs.

One of the benefits is that it is a light-weight and portable piece of equipment that offers so much versatility and range of exercises available. A big plus is that it can be easily taken and used outdoors which can make a training session much more appealing to many people who may otherwise have shunned a training session if it were to have been held indoors.

Another benefit is the low cost. The humble exercise ball can offer hundreds of exercise variations whereas a specialized exercise machine can usually do much less and can be quite expensive and is usually too heavy or cumbersome to be portable.

The benefits of the ball do not stop there. It is also the nature of the exercises on the exercise ball that are more beneficial to most people. In other words, exercise ball training usually involves compound movements that involve multiple joints and muscles. These exercises are more representative of natural everyday movements. Therefore, this type of functional training can not only improve fitness levels, but it can also help strengthen against everyday injuries such as pulling a muscle when lifting child or reaching for an object on a high shelf.

This does not mean that the ball cannot be used for isolation exercises. It can, in fact, make traditional isolation exercises better by not only increasing the difficulty but also challenging other stabilizer muscles. A good example is the abdominal crunch. Traditionally, the abdominal crunch is performed on a stable surface such as on the floor or a board. When performed this way, the main abdominal muscle (rectus abdominus) is isolated and negligible effort is required of other muscles.

When abdominal crunches are performed on an exercise ball, the rectus abdominus still gets just as good a workout plus now other stabilizer muscles are recruited to keep the body balanced on the ball.

Similarly, resistance exercises can also be performed on the exercise ball with the advantage of recruiting additional stabilizer muscles. An example is the dumbbell chest press. You simply rest your back on the ball instead of a bench and perform the dumbbell chest press exercise. It is strongly recommended that you start with light weights when beginning to use the exercise ball until you become accustomed to the balancing requirements in order to prevent injury.

The exercise ball is also excellent for developing balance due to the inherent instability of its round shape.

Now that the exercise ball has been adopted by mainstream fitness, it is difficult to imagine that it will ever go out of fashion because the benefits are so wide-ranging. It can be used by all age groups, from children through to the elderly. It can be used for simple balance exercises, body weight training, through to tough resistance exercises. Finally, it is inexpensive, portable and can be used outdoors. Yes, the exercise ball is here to stay.

What's a good leg massager for someone who stands up all day and spider veins?

My boyfriend works in a job where he has to stand up throughout his shift and carry heavy plates, etc. He has noticed some spider veins forming on his feet and lower leg, with a few in his thighs (not as much as feet and lower legs though) but hasn't complained about pain. I'm thinking of getting him a leg massager but am not sure what to get specifically. I've read that massages can help with spider veins and circulation. Does anyone know of any model that they have tried and loved? I am a bit on a budget and would like to stay in the low $100 range. ALSO, if anyone knows a website or place where I can get this stuff for cheaper prices I would love to know!

These are a few I was thinking about:

http://www.amazon.com/Beautyko-Air---Sage-Massager-cleared/dp/B002TUTLZE/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1308709850&sr=8-11

Thanks! :)

Thanks for helping me! I needed to know about that leg massage !

Seems to me that the leg that look like boots could be the best, but

also for the ankle ( not the long leg) would do good. If it is only the

ankle is ok the machine, but if your friend has problem all the way on

the lenght of the leg perhaps the boot would do.

I will try that one, the ankle one ( after I see the doctor next Thursday! )

I trust the Amazon.com, it is a reliable place.

PS: Look at the Review: the boot has 5 stars Review, the
ankle has 3 and a half stars Review, that show that the leg boot
could be the best.
